Dark adaptation and recovery from light adaptation: smokers versus nonsmokers.

چکیده

Because the published data concerning the effects of smoking on visual sensitivity at night are inconsistent, a new study was initiated to obtain ground level comparison data from smoking and nonsmoking Army aviators. Blood samples also were analyzed to compare serum levels of nicotine, cotinine, and carboxyhemoglobin with the visual measures. The present data show no differences in visual sensitivity between smokers and nonsmokers and no significant correlations between the blood and visual measures. The conclusion from these results is that the ability to see the dimmest lights at night is independent of smoking history when scotopic sensitivity is assessed at ground level.

Dark Adaptation in Agriolimax

A method is described which measures the excitation of Agriolimax by light, during the progress of light adaptation, by assuming that the orientating effect of continuous excitation is expressed as a directly proportionate tension difference in the orienting muscles of the two sides of the body. The tendency toward establishment of such a tension difference is caused to work against a similar g...

Dark regeneration of rhodopsin in crayfish photoreceptors

The eyes of crayfish were exposed to lights of known spectral composition, and the course of regeneration was followed in the dark by measuring the content of rhodopsin and metarhodopsin in single rhabdoms isolated at various times after the adaptation, using an assay that is based on the fluorescence of metarhodopsin. Complete recovery requires several days in the dark after intense adaptation...

Foveal light and dark adaptation in patients with glaucoma and healthy subjects: A case-control study

INTRODUCTION To determine whether foveal light and dark adaptation are affected in glaucoma. METHODS Case-control study with 23 glaucoma patients and 51 controls. Light and dark adaptation were measured twice. After 10 minutes pre-adaptation to 0.0032 cd/m2, the background luminance increased stepwise to 320 (5 log unit step) or 10,000 cd/m2 (6.5 log unit step) for 10 minutes, then it decreas...

Prolonged rod dark adaptation in retinitis pigmentosa.

The time course of rod dark adaptation was measured in 12 patients and carriers of retinitis pigmentosa (RP). In contrast to previous studies the rod absolute threshold was determined prior to any exposure to the bleaching light. For seven of the patients and carriers the recovery of rod sensitivity to the prebleach level was prolonged, with the delay ranging from mild to severe. The prolongati...

Light and dark adaptation in Phycomyces light-growth response

Sporangiophores of the fungus Phycomyces exhibit adaptation to light stimuli over a dynamic range of 10(10). This range applies to both phototropism and the closely related light-growth response; in the latter response, the elongation rate is modulated transiently by changes in the light intensity. We have performed light- and dark-adaptation experiments on growing sporangiophores using an auto...
